Week 10 of 23 Things: Conclusion (Thing 23)

Overall, I think that 23 Things was a success. It was a good refresher on some things and good exposure on others. I think it was especially good to be thrusted into a lot of these things because otherwise, I may have never gotten around to perusing these things. I liked creating the blog. It hasa given me some ideas on Blogs I may create in the future. I'm list maker so I have some ideas about a personal Wiki page. It was good to re-look at HTML. I had all but forgotten that I do know some about it.

I think thatthe overall program was pretty comprehensive, so I'm not sure what else could be added to it to make it better. I do think our patrons could definitely benefit from exposure to some of the neat concepts introduced here.

I think, in addition to the Podcasts, blog creating, wiki pages, and video and audio embedding, I was very impressed with the Khan Academy concept. That is something that I intend to take advantadge of.

Week 9 of 23 Things: Online Reading Tools (Thing 22)

In looking at the Novelist, the category that I chose to look at was the 0 - 8 age group in the humor section. There was a book titles "Interrupting Chicken" that caught my eye. Reading some of the comments about the book helped to peak interest and it may make the reading list when reading to my youngest.

Week 8 of 23 Things: Online Reading Tools (Thing 21)

In Bookletters I subscribed to the Children Picture Books. Since, I have a new budding reader in the family, I think I could get most use from this one here.

Week 9 of 23 Things: Online Reading Tools (Thing 20)

I recommended the book Makes Me Wanna Holler by Nathan McCall.

Week 8 of 23 Things: Wikis (Thing 19)

Having a wiki page for the library could prove to be useful. Maybe we could have a page with a link for each of the branches. Maybe a history of each of the branches. Perhaps some info on the services that each branch provides. Stuff like that. I mean, we already have a site that has a lot of info on the library already (lfpl.org) so, maybe a wiki page could prove to be supplemental to that.

Week 8 of 23 Things: Wikis (Thing 18)

The Wiki sites could prove to be useful for something like whatthe video described. It seems like it could be a very convienient tool for something, I'm just not sure where I would be able to find it useful atthis point in my life.

It was fun playing around with it though. I had not played with HTML code in a while. If you look on the favorite music and favorite tv show pages you'll see just how much fun I had with it. That being said, for someone like me, it might be good for something like scrap booking or something.

Week 7 of 23 Things: Online Video and Audio (Thing 17)

My first thought about the podcasts is that there is an abundance of information available on the internet. An information overload of sorts. I kinda compare to living in Kentucky. (Stay with me) It's easy to get complacent living in a place like Louisville (or anywhere for the sake of the arguement)and get used to the same old people, places, culture, etc. There's not a lot of diversity here and it's easy to get caught up in routine. Similarly on the internet, without exposure, it's easy to get caught up in the routine of visiting the same websites. That being said, looking at all of the podcast sites helps to get me out of said routine. Even having the ability to listen to the podcasts on MP3, my only concern is having the time to listen to all of the stuff that interests

I found the Louisville Sports Live podcast to be a good one. I'm always trying to to stay up on my U of L sports news and these guys seem to be a good outlet. For the national sports scene, I perused the ESPN podcast center. I'm all about PTI with Wilbone and Kornheiser and Scott Van Pelt and sometimes Mike and Mike. And since, I don't get a chance to catch PTI and Around the Horn the way I used to, I probably will make time to listen to those podcasts.

Week 7 of 23 Things: Online Video and Audio (Thing 16)

8 hours and 33 mintues of G.W. dropping jewels on the topics of Genius amd Commonsense...

Leadership Genius of George W. Bush: [10 Commonsense Lessons from the Commander in Chief]

Week 7 of 23 Things: Online Video and Audio (Thing 15)

This is probably one of my all time favorite dunks.

Week 6 of 23 Things: RSS and Google Reader

I was already pretty familiar with RSS feeds prior to the topic in 23 Things and I had seen Google Reader around, I just had not engaged it until now.  I'm glad that I did because it has proven to be a useful tool.  I picked a couple of random Hip Hop News sites that I frequent: HipHopDX.com and Okayplayer.com.  They both have regular updates.  To that point, while typing this document, I've gotten at least for updates from HipHopDx.com.

Week 5 of 23 Things: Research Tools

10b)  Courier Journal published the obituary on 03-18-08.  She had four sons: Raymond Jr., Terry, Gary and Yimmy.

10c)  I found Telos with full text through Gale.  I found The British Journal for the History of Philosophy and Clinical Medicine and Research using Ebsco.

11a)  The manager's name is Duane F. Kelly.  Stewardship Grade: B.  Vanguard Target Retirement 2020:  4 star rating.

11b)  Consumer Reports December 2009 issue

11c)  Starbucks.

12  I think that Ebsco and JSTOR are the best and most comprehensive, personally.  But if I had to pick one for the library, I'd say JSTOR.

Week 4 of 23 Things: Photo Sharing

This is the first time I've ever went this deep into photo sharing and who knew that it was this extensive.  I don't get many questions on the topic perhaps because the people who use it are people who already know what their doing with it.  I imagine that Flickr could prove to be useful in conjunction with Facebook in that it provides a safe and maybe more secure way for others to view your pictures.

I did my Flickr search for the BoogieMonster and appearently he does indeed exist, though not where you would expect.  No Sasquatch-esque images of the BoogieMonster roaming through the woods of West Virginia were to be found.  No candid shots of the BoogieMonster hiding under the beds of children across America either.  Often misunderstood, the BoogieMonster hangs out here... at the Friendswood Library in Friendswood, Texas.

Week 3 of 23 Things : Social Networking

Before reading up on social networking, I was already pretty familiar with both of the sites; one (Facebook) more so than the other.  I had all but sworn off of Twitter because I just felt that it was an overload of people's random thoughts about mostly nothing and I was already getting plenty of that from Facebook.  Since exploring it within the scope of 23 Things, I've had a change of heart and have actually signed up for my own personal account.  I was most impressed with how quickly I learned about some things before the news hit the radio and even some internet news sites I frequent.  So far, I've treated this one different than my Facebook account which I use primarily to keep up with old friends and family members.  I intend to only use my Twitter account to get quick up-to-the-moment information about things that matter enough to me.  I'm being pretty selective about who I follow and don't intend to have a lot of people following me on  this one.  I've had my account now for several weeks and I've only added two people that I follow: Jim Rome and Jemele Hill.  I still don'tunderstand a lot of the Twitter longo like #, RT (retweet?), and @, but with  some practice, I'm sure I'll get it eventually.
